Few years ago, a 6-year-old boy who had lost both his parents was rescued from an abusive environment where he was not even being fed properly. When he arrived at the shelter, he felt a sense of relief—and from that day on, he began calling his caretaker, Alia Kagzi as, “Mummy.” Today, Alia is a mother figure at Sadguru Foundation, an NGO founded in 2014 in Mumbai with the mission of uplifting underprivileged and vulnerable children

Having grown up in an orphanage herself, Alia deeply understands the pain and struggles these children face—many of whom have been abandoned, abused, or come from families unable to care for them. Along with her husband, she lives at the shelter home and provides round-the-clock care—waking them up for school, helping with homework, comforting them when they cry at night, taking care of them and celebrating their smallest achievements like a proud parent.

What makes this journey even more meaningful is that these children are not just being sheltered—they are being prepared for a brighter future. The foundation ensures that they receive quality education in private English medium school, giving them opportunities they never thought possible. From learning to speaking confidently in English to dreaming of becoming doctors, soldiers and professionals, their lives are slowly transforming. Every smile, every school result, every medal they win is a step away from their painful past and closer to a life filled with dignity.

However, behind these smiles lies a constant struggle. Providing for their daily needs is not easy. There are days when resources fall short—when arranging nutritious meals, school fees, books, medical care and even basic hygiene essentials becomes a challenge. While occasional donations bring moments of relief, what these children truly need is consistent support to continue their journey.

These children have already faced more hardships than most of us can imagine—but with a little love and support, they are learning to trust again, to dream again and to live again.
